AWS introduced the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner on December 21, 2017 via the AWS News Blog as its newest certification exam, creating a net‑new foundational credential focused on cloud concepts, security, technology, and billing/pricing rather than replacing an existing exam. On June 20, 2023, AWS announced an updated version: candidates could sit the existing CLF‑C01 through September 18, 2023, and the new CLF‑C02 began on September 19, 2023; CLF‑C02 is the current version as reflected in the official exam guide and certification page as of April 9, 2026, and in 2025 AWS added a game‑based recertification option (AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner) that was free during its beta through the end of July 2025.
