Introduced on February 28, 2023, DVA‑C02 replaced DVA‑C01 (retired February 27, 2023) and continues the AWS Developer Associate lineage that began on January 13, 2014.

AWS launched its certification program on April 30, 2013 with Developer identified as a core role, and the first AWS Certified Developer – Associate exam became available on January 13, 2014. AWS refreshed the exam in 2018 following a public beta (February 19–March 16, 2018); the updated exam was announced on June 10, 2018, and the prior version was retired on November 19, 2018, establishing the blueprint that would later be identified as DVA‑C01.
On January 31, 2023 AWS opened registration for the updated AWS Certified Developer – Associate (DVA‑C02), with the first day to test on February 28, 2023 and the last day to take the then‑current DVA‑C01 on February 27, 2023; DVA‑C02 reorganized the blueprint into four domains and removed an Elastic Beanstalk task. AWS later published exam guide revision 2.1 on December 12, 2024, consolidating knowledge and skills and adding Amazon Q Developer to the in‑scope services list; as of April 9, 2026, AWS lists DVA‑C02 as the active Associate‑level Developer exam with no retirement date announced.
